Good news, people of Detroit! Not only will the librarians in the city get to keep their jobs—the citizens of Detroit will get to keep their libraries. Previously, 18 libraries were scheduled to be shut down, resulting in heavy losses of resources and jobs in the city; now officials say that a math error was to blame, and the issue has since been corrected. When it comes to Detroit and jobs, one usually conjures the auto industry in the mind. However, we all know how hard the world of transportation has been hit in the economy—after all, most people can’t afford new cars! That said, it looks like the situation is improving, and Detroit reports that they hope to not only boost their sales, but also their jobs by 2015.
The Detroit Three are claiming that they’ll be able to increase the jobs in Michigan by a whopping 34% within the next four years. This translates to about 35,000 new jobs, which would be an ultimate blessing for the area. Do we need renewable transportation? Absolutely; we needed it decades ago. However, the Three might be able to work on just that—and they’ll need workers to do it. So, looking through various sources some of the scariest headlines for Detroit (as recently as last year) are "Detroit Unemployment Reaches Nearly 50%" and "Detroit Job Outlook Grim", as a job hunter in the area (or even an employed person who is not) these are terrifying headlines. When looking at the data from the Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn, MI U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics things don't actually look THAT bad - but they are certainly not what would be considered good. The unemployment rate from June 2010 through the projected numbers of November 2010 actually got better with a high of 16.5% to the current projected November 2010 statistic of 13%. Some states have posted net gains to their employment numbers this past month. Most notably, Michigan, which still has the highest unemployment rate at about 15%, has begun to cool down a bit, gaining nearly 40,000 jobs in October. Other states that have been faring poorly, like Nevada, also showed some modest gains. But one question lingers in the face of this positive growth and apparently good news- is this a result of seasonal hiring or perhaps the result of people no longer being counted as officially unemployed because they can no longer claim unemployment benefits? Detroit has taken the cake as the city with the worst unemployment rate in the nation. Without a doubt, the bankruptcy and restructuring of the auto industry, which occurred in early 2009 is one huge reason for this. Another reason for this abnormally high unemployment rate is the fact that many of the suppliers, producers, and marketing firms that once helped support the automakers no longer have any business to keep them afloat.
