Searching for a job through the Internet has become a major part of anyone's job hunting search. However, most major places with online databases of jobs can be competitive or don't offer as many jobs locally--but, there are places where a local can find a job. Here's how.
Live in Detroit or Metro Detroit and need a job? Search through these social media methods that cater to localized listings:
- Detroit Jobs on Twitter: there are many accounts on Twitter, such as @jobs4DET and @Detroit_Buzzz which will only list local jobs. Also, doing a search on Twitter with queries like "Detroit jobs" or "[LOCAL CITY] jobs" can work.
- Jobs might be closer than you think--as in, friends on your Facebook might have some leads. Asking friends and family, or even searching Facebook's Marketplace might yield some opportunities.
- Websites such as Detroit Employment Guide, Click on Detroit, and MLive's Detroit Works all try to help local people find the jobs they need and focus on Detroit and Metro Detroit unemployed with articles and newsletters.
- Though it might sound fruitless, using Craigslist can still help. Just being selective of which ad you apply for is crucial, as Craigslist is unfortunately known for their many spam ads.
While the above list of resources can help bolster job leads, these tips can help get you noticed online through social media:
- Keep an electronic version of your resume readily available online, either through a social network account (Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and such) or through a website. There are free website builders out there, such as Webs.
- Stay active and updated on job leads, stay in touch with employers, and keep networking on social networking sites. People are more likely to employ people they know rather than a complete stranger.
- Use a professional looking signature when emailing employers. Show your full name, address, phone number, links to any websites of yours or any other contact information.
Hopefully these tips and resources will help in the hunt for a job!
